Profile
Hello and thank you for taking the time to check out my site and portfolio work. My name is Derek and I am Front-end Designer/Developer residing in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon. Since 2006, I have been developing dynamic digital content for a variety of formats: 2d image, web, print, flash, video, UI, and UX. l am forever an admirer/student of art and design. I except nothing but the exceptional of myself and my work, continually striving to make every project a memorable, functional and lasting experience.
My love for art began with music at a young three years of age. I quickly became versed within its emotional territory and mystery. The unravelling relationship between nuance and symbolism opening doors to other mediums: books, film, design and fine art. For myself, music is the core epitome of liberal expression, creativity, purity, spirituality and key component/need for developing human intellect. Musically motivated, my first professional goal was to become a producer/recording engineer. In 1999 I graduated from The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona and then worked as a Recording Engineer in a few studios around Portland. During this time, I was also experimenting with computer art and design for personal and professional projects, and in 2006, decided to expand my career/education in multimedia/web development. In 2014, after attending three different schools, and working various freelance gigs along the way, I attained a BS in Interactive Design and Development.
Purpose
To design/develop memorable, and optimal, user experiences focused in minimalism, nuance, detail, typography, alluring aesthetics, intuitive functionality and clean strategic code. To seek the perfect balance between logical functionality and human emotional connection. To expand, and push forth, the culture, history, and discipline of the founding schools/movements of “modern design”. An evolving blueprint that defines the multi-facets of functional, commutative, emotional and cultural purpose.
Skills
DESIGN
I provide a variety of design, and consultation, services in both the print and digital domain. These include: logo design, branding, publication layouts, graphic design, web design, UX design / strategy, UI design, SEO and marketing.
CODE
Front-end development services utilize the following base languages: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP with continual education in associated frameworks and semantic best practices. I also, from the ground up, develop custom WordPress themes.
Media
Experience/Service within other digital formats (time based) such as video editing and motion design. Extensive experience with Apple Final Cut Pro Suite, Adobe After Effects, Premier and Flash. Experience with 3d rendering as well.
SOUND
Professionally experienced Recording Engineer service: music production, mixing, sound design, voice editing, film syncing and delivery optimization (for any medium) utilizing a wide range of tools and methods both in and out of house.
