Candescent Films produces award winning documentary films that examine a wide range of important cultural, social and political issues. In 2010, motivated by interests in social injustice and a passion for film, Lilly Hartley founded Candescent Films to support film makers who courageously aim public attention towards relevant, and often overlooked, volatile issues arising in the world today.

In Spring 2104, I began developing Candescent’s new website (with initial designs by the prestigious Ro & Co) utilizing the Squarespace platform. It’s a heavily modified theme utilizing both Squarespace’s interface and front end code (HTML/CSS/Javascript) for interactivity, content management, responsive functionality and social media sharing. From time to time, I also edited various film promos and designed updated page layouts.

During the last half of April 2015, Televerde (a corporate sales & marketing firm) contracted me to design an email pitch, and landing page, for VMware’s (cloud and virtualization software company) new Horizon 6 software/service promo campaign. The goal of the project was to create responsive layouts with increased visual appeal, focus and “call to action” for their new content/service. I was asked to create two different versions: A.(safe) based on VMware’s current branding, and B.(experiment), a “free rein” design with a new style approach. Client was delighted by both designs and ended up implementing version A.

Out of the two, my favorite was version B. because of its updated/refreshed look and personality that most likely would be very appealing to their audience. Both versions I had to create graphic assets(icons, promo images, etc.), but put the most time into B. because all of the visual content was created from scratch. Below is drafts of version B.

During first half of 2014, Kinfolk introduced a new clothing line and store. To meet customer demand, they needed an online store. The following summer I designed drafts, then later, developed the new e-commerce extension. Focus for the design was visual aesthetics, responsive functionality and usability for the visitor and content manager. Drafts of preliminary design included below.

Kinfolk needed a way to publish and advertise their events, so a new “Events” section was designed, developed and added to the site. The main event list can be filtered by venue location and the events themselves can be exported to iPhone or any other iCal enabled device. This lets tech savvy visitors keep up to date with Kinfolk’s schedule of events. This feature is not only convenient for the visitor, but also advertises the event more deeply within Google’s search engine. The event location also hooks into Google Maps as well.

In 2012, I created a personal typeface inspired by early 20th Century historical events, cultural movements and theoretical technique. It was something I had in the back of my mind for awhile, and began working on it through academic opportunity. A promotional poster was also generated based on the font family’s letter-forms and subject. The type, and poster, is a dystopian propaganda theme (with a modern spin) based on Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, early 20th century literature (sci-fi/, philosophy, etc.) and other culture/artistic movements that arose from the devastations of World War I and II. Below is drafts of the typeface and poster variations. ©DM_SHFT-de. 2012 – ∞

A scrapbook, of unutilized gems with the potential of becoming a key element to a great future development project! This is that page! As time goes on, this area may house revolving content as new, or unfinished, projects become realized. Below are examples of visual drafts/screen shots of personal, and commercial, concepts that haven’t been fully realized, but feel are worthy to be displayed in their current form. Examples may include graphic/web design, animation/video and or personal digital art. ©DM_SHFT-de. 2011 – ∞
